Eleven chairs in a circle, nine people in them, a jug of water nobody has touched, and a radiator that comes on at half past seven whatever the weather.
Wednesday. It has been Wednesday for nine years.
Pearl is fifty-two and she is the one who prays.
Not the leader; there is not really a leader. She is simply the one who, when it goes quiet, opens her mouth and prays for everybody in that circle by name and by situation, and she does it without notes, and she has never once got a name wrong or brought up something somebody wanted left alone.
She knows that Marlon's mother is home now but not well. She knows that Ola has an interview on the eighth. She knows what Tuesday is for Beverley, and she prays round it in a way that lets Beverley know she has been prayed for without anybody in that room having to hear the details.
That is not performance. It is not a skill she is deploying. She genuinely carries these nine people, all week, and it costs her something, and she would be surprised and slightly cross if you called it a gift.
And at the end, every single week, somebody says the thing.
Anything for you, Pearl?
And she says: just pray for the family.
Which is true. Her family could use praying for, like everybody's. And it is also, and she knows it, a wall she puts up in one second flat, without effort, having built it so long ago that she no longer notices herself building it.
There is one thing she has never brought into that room. Not once, in nine years, in a circle of people she would trust with anything.
Tonight there is a woman called Nadia in the eleventh chair. Three weeks in. Nobody knows her yet and she has said almost nothing and she is clearly still working out whether this is for her.
At the end, when the mugs are going round, she does not ask the usual question. She has not been here long enough to know the usual question.
She says: what is the thing you have not said?
You have that answer ready. Yours has different words in it. But you know how fast you can produce it, and you know exactly which room it protects, and I am not going to guess what is in that room.
He named what He will not do with it
Psalm 51 is the most exposed thing David ever wrote. There is no attempt in it to look well. And near the end of it he says the sentence that answers a fear most people never say out loud.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.Psalm 51:17
Thou wilt not despise.
That is a strange way to put it and the strangeness is the point. He does not say You will be pleased with it, or You will honor it, or You will reward it. He says: You will not despise it.
Which means somebody was afraid of exactly that.
You do not answer a fear nobody has. David is naming the thing that stops a person bringing the real item, and it is not that God is unable to help. It is quieter and more specific: that when the thing is finally said, out loud, in words, it will land badly. That it will be smaller than it felt. That it will be more shameful than expected. That the room, or God, will look at it differently afterwards.
You have been given a promise about the receiving, and it is already yours. That is the written word and not my reassurance in a circle of chairs, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line from the most exposed psalm in the book and lays it on a Wednesday evening under a radiator that came on at half past seven.
And look at what he calls a sacrifice. A broken spirit. A broken and a contrite heart.
That is not an achievement. You cannot manufacture it, you cannot prepare it in advance, you cannot bring a better one next week after some work. It is a state you arrive in, and it is the one offering in the entire psalm that God says He will not turn away.
Truth in the inward parts
Go back to verse six of the same psalm, because it names the room.
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts.
The inward parts. The interior. The place nobody in that circle can see, including the nine people who love you and would sit here all night if you asked them to.
That is what is wanted. Not a report. Not a summary suitable for a group. Truth, in the specific place you have never opened, and God is described as desiring it, which is a warm word and not a demanding one.
This is yours, and what He wants from you is truth in the one room, and it is already settled. Psalm 51 says thou desirest truth in the inward parts in exactly those words, and the same Spirit who moved David to write a psalm about his worst season is the one making it a present fact in a woman with a mug in her hands.
Now let me guard this carefully, because a woman like you can hear this as one more thing she is failing at, and that is the last thing I want.
You have not been dishonest. Praying for other people is not a dodge, and nine years of carrying nine people is not avoidance dressed up. That is real ministry, done well, at cost, and God has seen every week of it and nothing in this message takes one gram of it away.
And you have not forfeited anything by the nine years. There is no expiry on this. God has not been getting colder about you every Wednesday since 2017.
And I am not telling you to say it in that circle. That is not the instruction and it may not be right and you know that room better than I do. The naming that matters is out loud, in your own voice, to Him. What you do with those nine people is between you and them and this article is not going to walk into it.
So here is where we are, in the eleventh chair, on a Wednesday, with the mugs going round and a woman who does not know the usual question waiting for an answer.
You are going to name it. Not because your praying for other people was ever a cover, and not because there is a deadline on this, but because the fear underneath the wall is a specific fear and Scripture answers it specifically: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
It is already settled that He will not despise what you bring, and a nine second answer has no right to stay as the whole of what you say about yourself. Psalm 51 names the fear and answers it in the same clause, and the Holy Spirit is the one confirming it in you right now, in whatever room your chair is actually in.
You have carried nine people for nine years. Somebody is asking to carry one thing for you, and the One who asked for truth in the inward parts asked warmly, and said in advance what He would not do with it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these three out loud. The authority to speak them is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, not because you found the courage, and Scripture is the ground under every word while the Holy Spirit carries it. Jesus said speak to the mountain and do not doubt in the heart. So speak, and leave what He does with this to Him, in His own way and His own time.
- Answer I give when they ask about me, you are a wall and I built you. Scripture says a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise, and He said in advance what He does not do with what is brought.
- Fear of how it lands when I say it, get out, in the name of Jesus. David wrote thou wilt not despise and it is written as a promise about the receiving, and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries it in, not my composure.
- Lord, You said You would not despise it and You did the saying, and I thank You that the sacrifice You named is a state I arrive in and never an achievement I have to produce. Your word says truth in the inward parts, and Your Spirit is the one in this circle tonight. I am naming it out loud and taking one step today.
