It is a forty minute drive and about eleven of it is the good bit, where the road comes out from between the trees and there is nothing either side and the sky does whatever it is going to do that evening.
Nia is thirty-six and she has had a genuinely good day.
Not a performance. That is the first thing to establish, because otherwise this is a different article. Something actually happened today. She was in a room with people, and she said things she meant, and somebody was helped, and there was about twenty minutes in the middle of the afternoon where she was so plainly not doing it on her own strength that she has been thinking about it ever since.
She is not manufacturing this. It was real, and she knows the difference, and she has had enough of the other kind to be able to tell.
She comes out from between the trees at about twenty past seven with the window down.
And it arrives.
The same one. The one that has been arriving on this stretch of road, after days like this, for about six years.
I am not going to describe it. I do not know what yours is and I am not going to guess, and if you have been reading ahead waiting for me to name a category, there is not one in this article.
The thing that gets Nia is not the pull itself. She has a whole framework for the pull. She has read things, she has talked to two people about it over the years, she is not naive.
It is the timing.
Because it always comes after. Not on a flat Tuesday. Not on a week when she has been distracted and going through the motions. It comes on the way home from the days that were real, reliably, like something clocking in, and the reliability of it is what has done the damage.
Six years of a sequence, and somewhere in there the sequence stopped being a sequence and became a theory, and the theory goes: if it always follows the good day, then the good day must not have been what I thought it was.
She has never said that out loud either. There is nobody to say it to who would not immediately try to fix it, and she does not want it fixed at half past seven on a Tuesday, she wants it to not be true.
You have that sequence. Yours might be at a different time of day. But you know the pattern, and you know how long it has been running, and you know what you have quietly concluded from it.
Read what comes immediately before it
Romans 8:1 is one of the most quoted sentences in the Bible and almost nobody quotes what it is attached to.
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.Romans 8:1
Therefore.
That word is a hinge and it is pointing backwards. Whatever Paul has just said, this sentence is the conclusion of it, and you cannot understand the conclusion without the paragraph in front of it.
So what is the paragraph in front of it?
It is Romans 7, and Romans 7 is the most honest and most uncomfortable description of this exact experience anywhere in Scripture. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
That is the paragraph. And then, immediately, with no gap, because the chapter break was added by an editor centuries later and Paul wrote it as one flow: there is therefore now no condemnation.
You have a sentence about no condemnation that was written directly onto the description of this struggle. That is the written word and not my reassurance on a road at dusk, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes the join between two chapters and lays it on eleven minutes of open road at twenty past seven.
Paul does not put no condemnation after a chapter about victory. He puts it after a chapter about wanting what you do not want. That is where it belongs, and that is where he put it, and the order is the pastoral thing.
Now is a word about timing
Then the small word in the middle, which is the one your six years have been arguing with.
There is therefore now no condemnation.
Now. It is a time word, and it is doing specific work in a sentence full of theology: it tells you when the verdict is.
Not later. Not after this stretch of road. Not once the pattern has been broken for a decent run of weeks. Now, which in the moment you read it means the twenty past seven you are actually in.
You have been treating the verdict as pending. That is what a theory built on a sequence does: it turns every instance into new evidence in a case that is still open, and you have been quietly running that case against yourself for six years, and the reason the timing hurts so much is that it feels like the prosecution scoring a point at the exact moment you were doing well.
The case is not open. That is what now means.
This is yours, and there is no condemnation at this moment on this road, and it is already settled. Romans 8 says now in exactly that position, and the same Spirit named eight times in the next fifteen verses is the one making it a present fact in a woman with her window down.
Let me guard this carefully.
I am not telling you the pull does not matter or that what you do next is a detail. It is not a detail. Romans 8 goes on to say a great deal about walking after the Spirit and none of it is casual.
And I am not ranking anything or guessing anything. This article does not know what yours is.
And here is the one that matters most tonight: the reliability of the timing is not a measurement of your standing. There is nothing in Scripture that reads a pattern as a verdict. A thing being predictable does not make it a judgment; it makes it predictable.
So here is where we are, on eleven minutes of open road at twenty past seven, with the window down and the sky doing what it does.
You are going to hand back the theory. Not the pattern; the pattern is what it is and it may well arrive again next month. The theory. The one that turns a sequence into a verdict on the day you actually had.
There is no condemnation for you now, right now, as you read, and a pattern has no right to stay as a comment on what God did this afternoon. Romans 8 puts that sentence directly onto the most honest paragraph about this struggle in the Bible, and the Holy Spirit is the one confirming it in you at this moment, in whatever car or room you are actually in.
The day was real. What happened at three o'clock happened. Nothing that arrived at twenty past seven has the authority to go back and edit it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these three out loud. The authority to speak them is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, not because of what happens on the drive home, and Scripture is the ground under every word while the Holy Spirit carries it. Jesus said speak to the mountain and do not doubt in the heart. So speak, and leave what He does on this road to Him, in His own way and His own time.
- Timing of it on that road, you are not a comment on the day I had. Scripture says there is therefore now no condemnation, and now is a word about when the verdict is.
- Fear that the good day was never real, get out, in the name of Jesus. Paul put no condemnation directly onto the honest description of wanting what I do not want and it is written in that order, and the Holy Spirit is the One who settles it, not the sequence.
- Lord, there is no condemnation now and You did the settling, and I thank You that Paul wrote the worst description of this in the chapter immediately before he wrote that sentence. Your word says there is therefore now no condemnation, and Your Spirit is the one in this car. I am saying my one sentence out loud when it comes.
