The Group Chat She Muted

The bus is nine minutes away according to the sign, which means eleven, and it is raining in the particular way that goes sideways under a shelter.

Tess is twenty-four and she is standing at the dry end with her hood up and her phone in her hand and nothing to do for eleven minutes.

There were five of them.

That is the thing that existed. Five people, from a thing she did at nineteen, when she was somewhere quite different from where she is now, and it was one of those groups where three of them were only ever half in and two of them were her whole life for about a year.

And it kept going. That is the unusual part and she knows it is unusual. Four years of a group chat that did not die: photographs, an ongoing argument about a film, somebody's driving test, prayers requested in about six words with no ceremony because that is how they did it.

She muted it in April of last year.

She was having a bad week, and it was loud, and there were forty-one messages when she picked the phone up and she could not face the scroll, and she pressed mute intending to unmute it on the Sunday.

Fourteen months.

She never left. That is the detail that matters and it is the detail she has never once looked at properly. She is still in that group. Her name is still in the list at the top. It is still going, presumably, and she has not read it since April.

And in that fourteen months she has been doing something she would describe, if she used those words, as trying to be holy on her own. Getting up early some days. Reading a bit. Meaning it. And doing every single part of it in a sealed room, and being tired in a way she cannot account for.

Nine minutes says the sign, which is a lie.

She opens it because the bus is late and because she is standing in a wet shelter and there is nothing else to do with a phone.

Two thousand and something messages. She scrolls up, not down, which is what people do when they are looking for something they are afraid to find.

Three weeks ago, eleven messages in a row, and her name in most of them. Has anyone heard from Tess. I messaged her in February and nothing. Should someone actually go round. And then a photograph of a dog, because that is what that group is like, and the conversation moves on, and comes back to her twice more.

You have that thread. Yours might be a phone number or a road or a room. But you know you did not leave, you went quiet, and you know how long it has actually been.

Ye are, said over a church in a state

First Corinthians is a letter to a church that was, by any measure, a mess. Divisions, lawsuits, chaos at the table, an argument about who had the best gift. Paul is not gentle with them for sixteen chapters.

And in the middle of the chapter about the body, he says this to them.

Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.1 Corinthians 12:27

Ye are.

Present tense, stated flatly, over people who were behaving so badly that he had to write a letter about it. Not: you could be, if you sort yourselves out. Not: you will be again once the arguing stops.

Ye are.

You are the body of Christ, present tense, and it was said first to people in a worse state than any group chat. That is the written word and not my encouragement in a bus shelter, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a sentence written to a difficult church and lays it under a wet roof with the bus nine minutes away.

And then the phrase at the end, which is the one for you. Members in particular.

It means individually. Severally. One by one. Paul is saying that the membership is not a general condition of the crowd that you either participate in or drift out of. It is specific to each person, singly, by name.

Which means muting a thread does not change a placement.

God did the setting

Nine verses earlier Paul says who arranged it, and this is the sentence that decides whether fourteen months undid anything.

But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

God hath set. That is His verb. Every one of them, individually. As it hath pleased him, which means the arrangement reflects His preference and not the group's convenience or your participation rate.

You are not in a body because you keep up with it. You are in it because God set you in it, and He did the setting, and He was pleased to.

This is yours, and the placing was God's own act, and it is already settled. First Corinthians 12 says God hath set the members every one of them in exactly those words, and the same Spirit who distributes to every man severally as He will in that chapter is the one making it a present fact in a young woman with her hood up.

And three verses later there is a line that people always apply outward and almost never inward. The eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee.

You have been saying it to yourself. Not out loud, and not as arrogance, which is what people assume that verse is about. You have been saying it quietly, in the shape of a life: I can do this on my own, I do not want to be a burden, it has been too long now to explain.

Now let me guard this the way this site guards it.

I am not telling you the answer is to go to more things. That is not what this article says and it is not what the verse says. Attendance is not what Paul is describing; he is describing a placement God made and a set of people who belong to each other.

And if you are reading this and you genuinely have no group and no thread and nobody to unmute, you are not outside this sentence. Ye are is said over you as much as anybody. The body is not a room; it is a people, and you are in it because He set you in it, and the first person to name might be somebody you have not spoken to in years or somebody you have never met yet.
