The Word He Only Ever Met in a Rule

The reading room is warm in a way that makes people fall asleep in it, and the man on table four has been awake for all of it, which is not usual for him at four in the afternoon.

Ilan is thirty-four and he teaches, and this is the room he comes to when he wants to think about something properly rather than think about it in a car.

He has an old volume open in front of him at Numbers chapter six, and he has been sitting with it for about forty minutes without turning a page.

It is the Nazarite chapter. If you do not know it: it is the instructions for a particular kind of vow somebody could take for a set period, and it is a chapter of specifics. What is not drunk. What is not cut. What is not approached. It is, on any ordinary reading, a chapter of prohibitions, and it uses our word all the way through it.

And this is the shape of Ilan's whole life with that word.

He has only ever met it in a rule. Every single time. In a chapter like this one, in a teaching, in the mouth of somebody explaining what is required, and the word has always come attached to a specification. He does not resent it. He is a precise man, and he actually likes specificity, and there is a great deal in him that respects a chapter that means what it says.

But he noticed something in himself about six months ago and he has not been able to unnotice it. When the word appears in a text, his shoulders move. Before he has read the sentence. He braces. Thirty-four years of a word arriving and something being required, and his body has learned to get ready.

So he is sitting in a reading room bracing at a page.

And because he is the kind of man who finishes a chapter, he has gone on past the vow. Past the offerings. Past the shaving of the head at the end of the term. Down to the last four verses of the chapter, which have nothing to do with the vow at all and which he has read a thousand times without ever noticing where they were.

The blessing. The LORD bless thee, and keep thee. The oldest words in continuous use in the world.

They are the end of this chapter. The chapter of prohibitions ends in the most generous sentence in the Bible.

You have that brace. Yours might be in a different muscle. But you know that your body gets ready before your eyes reach the end of the line, and you have never once asked why.

Even inside the rule, the sentence lands somewhere else

Take the verse that is doing the work in that chapter, and read where it comes to rest.

All the days of his separation he is holy unto the LORD.Numbers 6:8

Read the last three words. Unto the LORD.

That is where the sentence lands. Not on the list of what he does not do. The prohibitions are in the verses before and after, and they are real, and I am not deleting them. But the sentence that actually uses our word does not end on a specification. It ends on a person, and a direction, and a relationship.

Holy unto the LORD. Set apart to Him. The whole of the vow is a way of belonging to somebody for a season, and the specifics are how a person in that culture expressed it, and the word itself points past every one of them to whose he is.

You have been reading the specifications and skipping the last three words for thirty years. That is the written word and not my rescue of an uncomfortable chapter, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a verse in the middle of a vow and lays it on table four under a green lamp.

And notice the other thing in that verse, which is a word about time. All the days of his separation. There is a beginning and there is an end. The vow in Numbers 6 is for a set term, after which the person goes back to ordinary life, and the chapter says so at some length.

Which means the passage that has been doing the most damage to your reading of this word is a passage about a temporary, voluntary, defined arrangement, and you have been generalizing it into a permanent standard for your entire existence.

And then the chapter ends in a blessing

Now the four verses that finish it, because their position is not an accident and it changed nothing in your reading only because nobody showed you the join.

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: the LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: the LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

That is the end of this chapter. The specifications come first and then that.

And the sentence God attaches to it afterwards is worth as much as the blessing: and they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them. Put My name on them. That is a belonging sentence, not a compliance sentence, and it is the last word of a chapter you have read for three decades as a chapter about what is forbidden.

This is yours, and the chapter you brace for ends with His name being put on people, and it is already settled. Numbers 6 puts the blessing at the end and says I will bless them in the first person, and the same Spirit who has kept those words in continuous use for three thousand years is the one making them a present fact in a man in a warm room in the afternoon.

Now let me guard this with the precision it deserves, because a sloppy version of this paragraph would be worse than the brace.

I am not telling you the specifics in that chapter are decorative. They are not. That vow cost something real and Scripture treats it seriously and the people who took it meant it. A reading of holiness with nothing in it that ever costs anything has stopped describing the Bible.

What I am telling you is the direction of the sentence. The specifics serve the belonging; the belonging does not serve the specifics. Get that order backwards and you have a life of compliance with a relationship bolted on the side, which is not the arrangement, and which is what your shoulders have been bracing for since you were a boy.

And the people who taught you the chapter as a list were not lying to you. It is a chapter with a list in it. They simply stopped four verses early, which is the most ordinary mistake in the world, and there is nobody in this reading room to blame for it.
